Graphic Text and Glitter Paint

 

This is my example for the lesson I’m doing with second grade on facial proportion, Roy Lichtenstein, and graphic text.

As I was mulling this post over in my head, it got me to thinking about posting teacher work vs. student work.  Teacher work is important, for many reasons, but mostly (for me anyway) it’s important because it puts my vision for the lesson on paper.  Sometimes, though, I’m afraid it’s misleading to blog readers, because often the student work is nothing like the teacher’s vision.  But that doesn’t mean the student work isn’t awesome in its own right, most of the time.  So, here’s my vision for the project, and tomorrow (or another day soon), I will show you how it actually turned out with my students.  I’m having some serious misgivings at the moment.  Maybe I’ve picked a concept that is too difficult for 2nd graders?  Well, we’ll see tomorrow.  But, I’m really excited about the project, and I think it will be fun no matter how they turn out.  The paint is glitter paint, and I’m going to have them choose either a primary or a secondary color scheme. I’m doing a graphic text lesson with 1st grade too, also using glitter paint and the same color schemes.  It will be fun to see how those turn out too.  I don’t have too many no-no rules in my art room, but one of them that I am adamant about it NO WORD BUBBLES*, so it’s especially fun for my students to work on a project where word bubbles are ok.  I always tell them that word bubbles are for cartoons or comics, and that maybe we will do a project where they are acceptable.  So here we go 🙂  There are some awesome children’s books that use graphic text and our media specialist helped me put this lesson together using some of them (Dust Bunnies, Pigeon, and Elephant & Piggie to name a few).  Wish me luck!!!

In other art room news, I have done clay projects with all but one grade level!!!  My clay room is overflowing with drying clay pieces!  

And on we go . . .

*and NO STICK PEOPLE, but I’ll save that for another post.  I don’t think I’ll do any lessons where stick people are ok.
